The Jewellery Quarter Development Trust (JQDT) is supporting Birmingham Heritage Week by running a host of interactive events this month that celebrate the rich heritage of the area. During the 11-day festival, visitors and residents alike will be able to experience variety of activities – many of which are free to book – including workshops, walking tours, film screenings and much more.

Birmingham Heritage Week is a city-wide festival that celebrates the second city’s long-standing, diverse heritage. Running from September 9th – 19th, the programme is packed with fascinating events and activities across the city.

Working together as part of the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust (JQDT), JQBID, Jewellery Quarter Townscape Heritage (JQTH) and Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries Project are set to facilitate 8 number of events throughout Birmingham Heritage Week: all of which will give residents and visitors the opportunity to re-discover hidden gems and local favourites within the area.

Commenting on the upcoming events, Executive Director for the JQBID, Luke Crane says:

Protecting and promoting the heritage of the Jewellery Quarter is one of the BID’s top priorities, so we’re really excited to be taking an active role in Birmingham Heritage Week 2021. We can’t wait to celebrate the rich, cultural value of the area and the vital role it’s played in shaping Birmingham’s history.

We’re hosting a wide range of events – from guided tours to film screenings, many of which are free to attend – that will allow visitors and residents to step back in time and re-discover our local landmarks across the city centre.

In recent years, the JQDT has secured over £2m in grant funding to maintain and futureproof the Quarter’s heritage; benefitting projects such as the restoration of the Chamberlain Clock and the Argent Centre, as well as partnering with other bodies to secure a further £2m for its cemeteries.

Speaking on the importance of celebrating and protecting the Jewellery Quarter’s heritage, Josie Wall, Activities Programme Manager at the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries Project says:

It’s vitally important, not only that restoration works are carried out, but that events are run to engage with individuals and to help teach and celebrate the stories of Birmingham’s past. The Cemeteries Project are putting on a whole host of events throughout Birmingham Heritage Week that celebrate our two important cemeteries and we’re really looking forward to welcoming visitors to learn more about their history.

Irene De Boo, Birmingham Heritage Week Co-ordinator at Birmingham Museums Trust, adds:

We are really grateful for the JQDT’s support during Birmingham Heritage Week 2021. The Jewellery Quarter is an integral part of Birmingham’s heritage scene, and we’re really excited for visitors and residents to be able rediscover the cultural significance and diverse history of their surroundings by experiencing a wide range of engaging events throughout the area!
