Local salon based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, BLACC + BLOND, has been announced as the winner of the Green Salon category in the Salon Business Awards 2022 and a finalist for the Sustainability Hero category in the Most Wanted Awards.

The Salon Business Awards are one of the most esteemed hairdressing awards within the hairdressing industry, ran by hairdressing trade publication, Salon Business and this year was one of the most highly contested years yet, with salons and stylists from the UK and Globally entering to be in with the chance of winning the awards trophies and taking titles back to their area to showcase to clients and to build on their reputation.

The Salon Business Awards evening was held at Quaglino’s in Mayfair and saw the hairdressing elite come together to enjoy bubbles and canapés whilst listening to Spotify’s number one saxophonist, Brendan Mills, before celebrating theirs and their peers’ achievements in the awards and dancing the night away. BLACC + BLOND were up against eight finalists for the category before being announced as the winners on the evening.

The Most Wanted awards, established 22 years ago by leading industry magazine Creative HEAD, celebrate the stars of this vibrant, robust, upward industry and just this week BLACC + BLOND were announced as one of only five finalists within the Sustainability Hero category. The BLACC + BLOND team will now join their fellow finalists at the Most Wanted Grand Final, another one of the most hotly anticipated events in the hairdressing calendar, taking place on Monday 5 September. Held at London’s iconic Tate Modern, the most-visited art gallery in the world, the Grand Final brings together an all-star guest list of more than 700 names to celebrate the crowning of the 2022 champions.

Being announced as the winner of the Salon Business Awards Green Salon category and a finalist of the Most Wanted Awards Sustainability Hero category is a fantastic achievement for BLACC + BLOND, showing their great efforts towards making the world a better place. The salon started their sustainability journey in 2021 and on 22nd April 2021, World Earth Day, launched their project “GREEN IS THE NEW BLACC”. The salon changed their energy provider, decided to stock only ethical product brands, changed their refreshment offerings to help reduce food waste by using wonky fruit, brought in toilet paper made from bamboo, reduced the single use of plastic by using refillable cleaning products and installed eco-friendly shower heads to reduce water wastage. Not only that, they chose to donate 10% of new client service fees to OneTreePlanted to plant trees across the planet and the salon became a Climate Positive Workforce, with Owner Anil Salhan offsetting the carbon emissions of his staff.

Owner of BLACC + BLOND, Anil Salhan, commented:

To win the Salon Business Green Salon award and be announced as a finalist in the Most Wanted Awards Sustainability Hero means a great deal to us. We have put so much thought and effort into making our space more green and sustainable, with the aim to become the most sustainable hair salon on the planet, and we’re delighted the awards have been able to notice this.

At BLACC + BLOND we never stand still and are always looking for ways to improve. We wanted to make sustainability a lot sexier, more cool, creative and inclusive for everyone – to take away the confusion and imitation behind it and make it a basic standard for everyone. We’re not just trying make change in the hair salon, we’re trying to make it resonate with everyone, we want it to go beyond our city, our county and the planet and show people we can all do better and we’re just trying to do our part.

Hopefully by winning and finalising for these awards it will spread the word on what we are doing and many other businesses will be encouraged to be eco-friendly too.
