NEC exhibitionOct2014

Meet Ina, the owner of Cake Quarter on Vyse Street. The baking extraordinaire joined the Jewellery Quarter community in October 2014 and has already made a name for herself in the area thanks to her sweet treats and elaborate creations.

Luke Crane, JQ BID manager, went to visit Ina and see what the business is all about.

What kind of cakes do you make?

We have three cake collections and specialities including weddings, celebrations and cupcakes. Each cake can be as multi-coloured, delicately decorated or stacked as high as you like!

Why did you choose the Quarter to set up your business?

Its character and heritage was a big selling point. As it’s the home of many small businesses, all offering something special to customers, we knew that the Cake Quarter would fit right in. We wanted to offer those love birds that flock to the Jewellery Quarter to pick out wedding and engagement rings a personalised cake experience, too.

How long does it take to make one of your masterpieces?

One of my larger creations, such as a three-tier wedding cake, can take between three days to a week. The team work alongside customers to ensure that they receive a personalised creation that reflects their personality or the theme of the event. Not only will the cakes look spectacular but they’ll taste delicious, too. As well as the traditional sponges, we have a wide range of unique flavours on offer. I can highly recommend the red velvet sponge with cream cheese frosting.

What has been your most extravagant request?

The Cake Quarter is always up for a challenge and we’ll always welcome unusual requests. My most challenging cake to date would be an upside down wedding cake that could be suspended from a chandelier. This cake was inspired by The Big Bang Theory star, Kaley Cuoco’s wedding cake. Let’s just say it’s a work in progress!
