Behind the Scenes Building Tour – Assay Studios

10th September 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

The Birmingham Assay office opened in 1877 and over the following 90 years was extended into a complex series of interlocked rooms, offices and workshops. The rationale for new owners TCN was to creatively regenerate this historic building for modern occupation, using minimum intervention to recover the former glory of the building and preserve the listed features such as safes when creating a vibrant tech-hub and innovation centre with a contemporary twist. Learn how this disjointed building was given a new sense of place and flow by creating a new central heart where the old garage doors used to be. Visit secret rooms like the vault and wine store, marvel at period features including staircases and fireplaces, and peek inside some of the original spaces like The Library, now getting a new lease of life. This event is free and includes refreshments on arrival. Booking is essential as places are strictly limited. Please be aware that to fully explore some areas of this historic building, we will need to use the stairs and so this tour is not wheelchair accessible. If you have any other questions about access, please email The Jewellery Quarter is accessible by train and tram to Jewellery Quarter station. Bus services 101 and 8A/8C stop at The Chamberlain Clock. The best place to park is in the Multistorey Car park on Vyse Street as on street parking is limited. Please be aware that the Jewellery Quarter is inside the Clean Air Zone. There are lots of local pubs, cafes and shops to explore before or after your tour. Organised by JQBID
