This month marks a new dawn for the former Standard Works building. City planners have given the go-ahead to convert the Victorian factory that has been empty for almost two decades, into a specialist further education college for 16 – 25 year olds.

Glasshouse College, which is owned by the Ruskin Mill Trust, will see the building transformed into a college that can teach up to 90 students with emotional and learning difficulties.

The college will also house a cafe with its own bakery, a rooftop garden selling local produce, a commercial zone for young jewellers and a visitor space detailing the history of the Jewellery Quarter.
BPN Architects have designed the renovation and are due to start the project in September for completion next year.

The new college will enhance the educational facilities already on offer in the Jewellery Quarter. We’re really looking forward to welcoming the new addition to the district.
