UCB Team Up with Burning Soul for Perfect Puds!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A limited-edition of this year’s UCB Christmas pudding has been made with a coconut-based beer from Burning Soul, brewed within ‘hopping’ distance of the University.

Every year, students from UCB’s bakery courses roll up their sleeves, don their pinnies and produce hundreds of delicious traditional Christmas puds made with Guinness or a similar stout to sell in the University’s Cakes and Bakes shop.

However, this Christmas, at least half of the 700 puds on sale have been made with Burning Soul Brewery Company‘s “Coconut Porter”.

Located in the former Two Towers Brewery in Mott Street, less than a mile from UCB’s Summer Row campus, Burning Soul was founded by friends Rich Murphy and Chris Small and was named Best New Brewery in the West Midlands by the international RateBeer.com community when it opened in 2017.

Samantha Dowle, Assistant Dean for Bakery and Patisserie at UCB’s College of Food and Hospitality Management, said:

We traditionally make all our Christmas puddings with Guinness, but to promote sustainability and support our fantastic local producers, this year, we decided to sample some of the beers from Burning Soul. We tried them out on the puddings back at UCB, with a sensory session with students, and the Coconut Porter came out top. Made with fresh hand broken coconuts, one to every 20 litres, it is a bit different to the norm, but really accentuates the other flavours in the pudding. Half of the 700 Christmas puds we’ve steamed this week have been made with the Coconut Porter, we hope they make a smashing addition to festive tables.

Students, staff and members of the public can now buy the limited edition Christmas puddings at the Cakes and Bakes shop at Summer Row. There are four sizes, from individual to family size, priced from £1.80.
