The Compound, renovated former factory, for sale in the JQ

A former Jewellery Quarter textiles factory that underwent an extraordinary renovation, has gone on the market for offers in the regions of £2.75m.
The Compound, which offers approaching 9,000 sq. ft. of multi-functional living space, is an award-winning property that has welcomed the likes of Warner Brothers, Ed Sheeran and Steven Spielberg.
The property was completely remodelled in 2012 by local developer Javelin Block, who set about the renovation with a focus on reanimating the building while honouring its former use – with many fixtures and fittings sourced from local craftsmen and tradespeople. The transformation has seen the property shortlisted for the prestigious Stephen Lawrence award in 2017 and the recipient of three RIBA awards that same year.
The unassuming property includes three self-contained living spaces, an artist’s studio, office, speak-easy bar and a 25-seat cinema. The space has been used by a number of blue chip companies and industry-leading figures for exhibitions and photo shoots.
Stuart Holt, founder and MD of Javelin Block, says:
“When I set out to redesign and reanimate this warehouse, it was for me and my stuff. I had no idea that it would resonate so strongly with people. Eight years ago if someone had told me that Steven Spielberg and Ed Sheeran will have filmed in my living room, I’d have laughed at them. When you restore and reanimate historic and industrial buildings for a living, you better make sure you get your own house in order. Three RIBA awards and being shortlisted for The Stephen Lawrence Award is a pretty good barometer.”
Joe Shorney, head of residential development in the Midlands at Savills, adds:
“Properties such as this just don’t come to the market very often because they are few and far between. The Compound is a hidden gem, tucked away on the fringes of the Jewellery Quarter within the city centre. The repurposed building is a true reflection of the rich industrial heritage on offer within the UK’s second city and the care, vision and craftsmanship taken to create this incredible space is evident the moment you walk through the door. We anticipate the property will naturally appeal to a Birmingham buyer as the ultimate city pad, but also will attract attention from London and international buyers looking to capitalise on the Birmingham growth story. The Compound not only offers an incredible home but also a rare opportunity to combine event space and an incredible working environment, subject to the relevant permissions.”
The Compound is within walking distance of some of the city’s best shops, bars and restaurants. Nearby Birmingham Snow Hill and Birmingham New Street railway stations also provide direct links to London Euston and London Marylebone from 1 hour 24 minutes.
