Keeping our streets safe

As part of the BID’s aim to make the Jewellery Quarter a safer place to be, there is a plan to install gates at the entrances to the alleyway between Hylton Street and Key Hill Drive

The scheme – funded jointly by the police, the BID, local businesses and residents – is currently in a consultation period of four weeks ongoing, with notices posted at either end. The purpose is primarily to prevent anti-social behaviour; to reduce crime in the area by cutting off this escape route; and to provide safety and reassurance to those walking past this alleyway late at night.

The plan is to close off the alleyway, which is not a public right of way, with a single gate at one end and a double gate at the other. Both will have an electronic keypad lock and the passcode will be given to all local businesses, residents and ‘service providers’ such as the BID ambassadors, JQ Neighbourhood Police Team and the postman.

Quotes for the gates are being prepared and it is anticipated they will be in place before the end of March.
