Historic Joseph Knibb Timepiece Table Clock Achieves Over £20,000

Fellows Auctioneers is thrilled to announce that a single-owner collection of clocks, timepieces, and scientific instruments formed over sixty years went under the hammer on Wednesday 4th September.

The star of the show was the exceptional Joseph Knibb timepiece table clock (Lot 1). The Joseph Knibb timepiece, a great example of 17th-century English clockmaking, is a testament to Knibb’s innovative craftsmanship and legacy. Known for his advancements in horology, Knibb’s work remains highly sought after, with his clocks often regarded as masterpieces of design and engineering. With its intricate movement and elegant aesthetic, this clock stands as a significant artefact from a period that revolutionised timekeeping.

Bidding for the clock was intense with over 50 bids placed and the timepiece ultimately achieved an impressive £20,150.00 including fees. This surpassed its pre-auction estimate of £4,000 – £6,000 and shows the strong demand for high-quality, historical timepieces in today’s market.

Another highlight of the auction was an exquisite English quarter-striking carriage clock by William Taylor of Clerkenwell (Lot 10). This beautifully crafted clock was estimated at £400 – £600 with its elegant design and historical significance making it a standout piece in the auction. The William Taylor carriage clock drew significant attention and fetched a notable price of £4,875.00 including fees.

Additionally, an E.J. Dent ebonised repeating clock (Lot 2), known for its precision and aesthetic appeal, was another significant piece in the auction, achieving an impressive sale price of £7,865.00 including fees. With an initial estimate of £3,000 – £5,000, 63 bids later our audience proved the timeless appeal of E.J. Dent’s work, a name synonymous with high-quality timepieces.
