Consultation now open for Jewellery Quarter Neighbourhood Plan

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Jewellery Quarter Neighbourhood Plan (JQ Plan) is now open for consultation until 16th September 2022.

The JQ Plan has been created by the community, for the community. People working in, living in and representing the Jewellery Quarter have created a new set of local planning policies that are tailored to address the very particular needs of the area. These have now been published for consultation by Birmingham City Council which will run until 16th September 2022.

The JQ Plan will help the Jewellery Quarter be a successful community of businesses and residents, with jewellery and designing/making at its heart.

Key policies in the JQ Plan include:

  • Designating a creative district that prioritises the jewellery and creative industries
  • Conserving beautiful buildings and requiring higher quality new development
  • Improving supply and quality of space for businesses
  • Making it easier to get to and around the Jewellery Quarter
  • Creating new high quality public spaces which include much-needed greenery

After the consultation closes, the JQ Plan and comments are reviewed by an Independent Examiner.  The JQ Plan then goes to referendum, with Jewellery Quarter residents and businesses each having their own vote.

Matthew Bott and Nicola Fleet-Milne, who both co-Chair the Jewellery Quarter Neighbourhood Planning Forum comment:

It has been a labour of love by a group of people from across the Jewellery Quarter, but after 7 years of research and review, the JQ Plan is ready. This Plan is our stake in the ground – it’s an opportunity for the Jewellery Quarter to drive its own success by steering much-needed investment to deliver wider benefits for all our communities.

The Jewellery Quarter Development Trust (JQDT) is now calling on everyone with an interest in the Jewellery Quarter to engage with the Plan by taking the survey on the council website here.
