PMP to act as Quantity Surveyor on Oatly’s new plant-based factory!
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Following on from the success of innocent drinks ‘the blender’, Jewellery Quarter based PMP Consultants have been appointed by Integrated Food Projects as quantity surveyor on Oatly’s new plant-based drinks factory.
The production site is anticipated to open in the first quarter of 2023 and will create at least 200 jobs. Located in Peterborough, it will be Oatly’s first UK factory. PMP have been acting on the project since early 2020 and work is due to start on site in August 2021.
The World’s largest oat drink company
Oatly, the world’s original and largest oat drink company, has been exclusively focused on developing expertise around oats for over 25 years. They are a company who are driven by sustainability and one who want to minimise their impact on the planet through efficient use of raw materials and resources, such as energy and water. The UK factory is part of the wider initiative from Oatly to build factories fit for the future. With an ambition of continuous improvement in all areas, Oatly is aiming to use 100% renewable energy, and decrease its energy, water and waste consumption by 75% each at the factory, by 2029 (compared to Oatly’s environmental footprint in 2019).
The new factory
The new factory is anticipated to produce 300 million litres of oat drink per year at launch, with the capacity to grow to 450 million litres, making it one of the largest plant-based dairy factories in the world. Ingredients will also be sourced locally; this will mean that plant-based dairy will be more accessible, and easier for people to make the move from cows’ milk, and in turn, helping them to reduce their climate impact. A plant-based diet is not just good for our health; it’s also good for the Earth’s health. Oats are a global power crop with intrinsic properties suited for sustainability and human health.
PMP’s experience
With over 30 years’ experience of working on production facilities in the UK and abroad, PMP are excited to join Oatly on their journey to create their first UK factory. Oatly has sustainability running through its core. And, working on both the innocent and Oatly schemes, has inspired PMP to start the process of becoming a certified B-Corp company. B-Corps are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability, to balance profit and purpose. The accreditation process is rigorous and can take many months to complete, so watch this space.
