Guest Blog: Things to do in the JQ for young people

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Our latest guest blog is written by Raven, a Year 10 pupil from Jewellery Quarter Academy. In March, Raven completed a work experience placement with the JQBID. She shadowed all the teams including spending the day with the Clean Team and the Ambassadors as well as undertaking office-based tasks such as research and drafting content for social media. This blog was an ongoing project incorporating much of what Raven saw and learned about the Jewellery Quarter during her time with the JQBID.

Things to do in the Jewellery Quarter for ages 8 – 18 years old

As I have spent 4 years in the Jewellery Quarter, I have come to realise there doesn’t seem to be a lot for teens to do at first glance, but after spending some time investigating I have found loads of ideas and suggestions for things teens can do in the Jewellery Quarter.

Escape Live

Escape live is a unique experience where participants are trapped in a room for 60 minutes and must escape before the time runs out. You will have to search for clues and solve the puzzles to find a way out. Teamwork is needed to find the exit and the experiences at escape live is good for teens. It helps shape their team work ethic whilst presenting a challenging task jam-packed with puzzles and brain teasers. Located under one of the Livery Street train tunnels it is a short walk from Snow Hill Station. If you are under 18 you will need someone over 18 present in the room.

The Chocolate Quarter

The Chocolate Quarter is a chocolate shop in the Jewellery Quarter home to hundreds of exotic chocolatey flavours, each item is handmade at the shop from raw cocoa bean to finished bar. The shop offers chocolate experiences, a private kids chocolate workshop for £25 and for teens a £40 private teen chocolate truffle masterclass.

The Newman Brothers Coffin Works Museum

The Newman Brothers factory was established in 1882 by Alfred Newman and his brother Edwin. Originally brass founders, they predominantly made cabinet furniture until 1894, when the company moved to the present site on Fleet Street and began to specialise in the production of coffin furniture. Newman Brothers continued to specialise in this area until, due to competition from abroad and failure to modernise, they were forced out of business and ceased trading in 1998. Now the museum offers guided tours and has special open days and even spooky ghost stories at Halloween and immersive theatre performances.

Birmingham Bouldering Centre

The bouldering centre has been open since 2012 and is located a short walk from Snow Hill Train Station and only 10 minutes from New Street Train Station. If you are new to rock climbing you need to book an induction to learn how to use the centre safely which costs £20 for one person and an additional £10 for every extra person. All children under the age of 14 must be supervised by a registered over 18. You can also book birthday party’s for 1 hour for £60.
