The construction of the new Assay Office Birmingham purpose-built headquarters is starting to take shape in St George’s development, fronting Icknield Streeet.

Steel frames for the new building will change the landscape of the Jewellery Quarter as the famous office relocates due to a growth in business. Assay Office Birmingham is one of Birmingham’s oldest institutions and is the largest Assay Office in Europe.

The iconic office is known for the testing, verifying and hallmarking of precious metals including jewellery and silverware and has also branched out to offer fashion accessories, watch and gemstone verifications.

Currently the Assay Office works from a Grade II listed Victorian building located on Newhall Street that has been extended several times during its history to accommodate for the growth in business and is now a labyrinth of different working areas.

The new building will offer better facilities and a larger space for commercial growth. It will also provide wider public access to the resources Assay Office Birmingham has to offer such as a private library and silver collection visits.
