Vintage Cartier Tank breaks Fellows’ house record

A vintage Cartier watch has broken the house record for a Cartier watch being sold at Fellows Auctioneers. The Cartier Tank sold for an impressive £44,850 (including fees) and featured as Lot 29 in Fellows’ latest Watches auction on Thursday 31st October. After the hammer went down the watch had attracted 71 bids from 17 different bidders.
It proved extremely popular due to its rarity with the hallmarks dating it to 1973, just on the cusp of Cartier’s reunification suggesting it could be one of the latest London Cartiers produced. The watch also featured the original clasp and its ‘hidden screw’ case.
Fellows’ previous house record was a Cartier Tonneau which sold for £15,312 (including fees). The watch went under the hammer back in January 2021 and attracted plenty of interest as it belonged to a WWI Captain who fought on the Western Front.
Nathan Boot, Cataloguer at Fellows Auctioneers, states:
“When we first saw the hallmarks revealing the London origin of the watch, we knew we had something special on our hands as we don’t see London Cartiers very often. We are astounded by the reception the watch had and are extremely happy with the impressive result.”
Fellows’ next Watches auction is on Thursday 12th December, and are accepting consignments now.
