New hotel plans for St Paul’s Square

The husband and wife team behind the renovation of The Village in Moseley are now eyeing a project above The Ropewalk in St Paul’s Square.

Suburban Inns has lodged plans to convert the two floors above the pub into a 31-bedroom hotel, which would create 40 full- and part-time jobs.

The space at 15-20 St Paul’s Square is currently used as offices and the site’s rear car park would remain as part of the development.

Guests would benefit from a lively area of the historic manufacturing quarter with The Rectory, The Jam House and Actress & Bishop among the bars in very close proximity as well as The Ropewalk just downstairs.

A design statement prepared by Leamington Spa-based AT Architects said: “The proposal will bring jobs and further revenue as well as additional visitors into the area which will add to the local services.

“It will make use of the existing building to its full potential while still retaining the external elevations. It is felt the proposal is appropriate in terms of scale and design and remains consistent with the character of the square.”

Husband and wife team Adrian and Sharon Harvey founded Suburban Inns and their first venture was the renovation of the former Village Inn in Moseley in 2013 which had been vacant for two and half years. The couple also owns the Royal Hotel in High Street, Sutton Coldfield.

This application is just the latest in a long line of proposed redevelopment projects in St Paul’s Square and the Jewellery Quarter.

Plans have recently been lodged to extend Italian restaurant Pasta di Piazza, in nearby Brook Street, while 63 St Paul’s Square could be converted into a restaurant and flats.

The team behind the Bloc Hotel, in nearby Caroline Street, is hoping to extend it to create a 30-bedroom apart-hotel while Staycity is on course to open its 170-bedroomapart-hotel in Newhall Square later this year.
