JQ Opera Company Announces New Opera for Birmingham

Birmingham Opera Company, based in the Argent Centre on Frederick Street, is proud to announce an international collaboration to create a new opera for Birmingham that will receive it World Premiere in the city in March 2018. The 18 month project brings together Graham Vick CBE, co-founder and Artistic Director of Birmingham Opera Company, leading Italian composer, Giorgio Battistelli and writer Sarah Woods.

Birmingham Opera Company is heralding the launch of the new opera with two free events this month  – including a film screening of some of Battistelli’s  landmark work on Sunday 27th November at Millennium Point and a chance to see Graham Vick work with some with amazing  opera talent on Tuesday 29th November at the CBSO Centre. Each event offers unique access to the creative process, the art of composition and singing.

Giorgio Battistelli, co-artistic director, Rome Opera, is Italy’s foremost experimental composer. His latest opera CO2 on the future of our planet was premiered at La Scala Milan in 2015.

Birmingham Opera Company, regarded as pioneers in the art form, will screen some of Battistelli’s landmark work and additional behind the scenes films, discussions and activities on the making of a 21st Century opera.

The event will feature contributions from the composer, international opera director, Graham Vick and writer Sarah Woods a former University of Birmingham student and lecturer who has previously worked with Birmingham Opera Company on Fidelio in 2002 and Ariadne Auf Naxos in 2006 and who is writing the  words for the new opera.
