Jewellery Quarter BID Renewal ballot success

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Businesses have voted in favour of a second term for the Jewellery Quarter Business Improvement District (BID). The result in the recent renewal ballot means that it now has the mandate to proceed for another five years.

Over 700 businesses and organisations were asked to vote in the postal ballot between 7 June and 5 July. The Jewellery Quarter BID received backing from 88 percent of those that voted by number and 85 percent by rateable value. Turnout was 38 percent by number and 42 percent by rateable value.

Nicola Ridler, Chair of the Jewellery Quarter BID and Property Manager at The Big Peg welcomed the successful outcome: “I am delighted that the businesses have voted for the BID to continue. It will mean an additional £2.9 million is generated for the Jewellery Quarter over the next five years which will be used for the benefit of businesses as well as for people who live, learn and visit here.

“The Jewellery Quarter BID team will now get to work on delivering the services and initiatives set out in our Renewal Proposal document to unlock the potential of the Jewellery Quarter, attracting more investment, employment and visitors.”

Some of the highlights of the BID’s activities will be improvements to the public realm, expanding the dedicated cleaning team, boosting recycling facilities for businesses and free public Wi-Fi. It will also continue to work closely alongside the Jewellery Quarter local neighbourhood policing team and strategic partners and bodies including the West Midlands Combined Authority and Midland Metro.

The Jewellery Quarter BID is operated by the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust, an independent community interest company, and is funded through a levy that’s set at 2 percent of the rateable value of non-domestic premises of over £10,000 within the BID boundary.
