01/11/16  – Helping each other

As you walk around the Jewellery Quarter take some time to look above the shop and factory doors and see just how long some of the makers and traders have been here. We have many small businesses and many of these are also family businesses with some having been here for over a century. It’s that family atmosphere that makes the Jewellery Quarter a special place to work, if you have a problem there is always someone who knows someone that can provide the solution.

A short walk over the road from the Small Business Saturday Bus stop on Golden Square is Artfull Expression which currently has work on display from 70 makers. Yes, 70 makers! Can you imagine how many years of experience and craftsmanship that adds up to? Come to think of it that also means there are 70 small businesses under one roof! The work on display represents the best in silverware in the UK and many of the makers are local to the Jewellery Quarter. It is about more than exhibiting work, David Louis Hendley wants to make the space a platform for makers to come and gain business knowledge as well as learning new skills and techniques.

Sharing knowledge is key to ensuring that small businesses in the area have longevity and with more businesses moving in building relationships was never more important, the many small businesses in The Big Peg (big white building behind the Small Business Saturday Bus) know all about this as networking, business seminars, and connections are what the team at Big Peg provide for all its residents. There is a real buzz when you enter the building which has provided the space for many small businesses to flourish.

Who would have thought that two spaces within 50 metres of each other would contain or represent over 100 small and micro businesses right here in the heart of Birmingham? It will be great to see you and hear about your small business story when the Bus Tour arrives on 8th November 10 -14 and also learn what you will be doing for Small Business Saturday  on 3rd December.

Tomorrow we will be looking at the independent cafés, pubs and restaurants that provide the fuel for all of our small businesses to thrive!
