Most watches sold today fall into two categories; Fashion watches and Electronic watches.  Fashion watches are inexpensive, manufactured all over the world and are powered by miniature batteries.  Electronic watches are controlled using a Quartz crystal, which rings at a high frequency, resulting in an accurate and reliable timepiece.

Fashion Watches
The design of the fashion watch is often licensed and represents a large proportion of the watches available.  These watches are normally made from plastic or base metal and/ or stainless steel.  Watches of this nature can cost from between about £30 and £800, but cased in gold may cost from £300 to £3000.

Electronic Watches
Electronic watches tend to be more classically designed and expensive in construction, utilising a traditional mechanical movement requiring great skill.  Watches of this kind are generally manufactured in Switzerland.  Branding is a very important element as the makers name usually determines the price of the watch.

The watch can be manually wound or automatically wound by a weight which oscillates when worn by body movement.   The induced energy is stored in the mainspring and is released via a system of gears controlled by an oscillating balance wheel connected to the hands on the dial,

The top manufacturers ensure the quality; limit the number of items available for sale and the agents appointed to service the watches to ensure product integrity.  These watches can cost many thousands of pounds and are looked upon as an investment.
