Conflict Diamonds
This term arose from the illegal exploitation of diamonds in various parts of Africa where funds were used to fund rebels in a series of wars. The main areas affected were Angola, Sierra Leone, Congo, Liberia and Guinea.
Subsequently, the Kimberley process was introduced which is a global system which manages and certifies the diamond trade. It is supported by a Code of Conduct introduced by the World Diamond Council which requires traders to warrant that diamonds have come from legitimate sources not involved in conflict. Also, it is a guarantee that diamonds are conflict free, based on personal knowledge and guarantees provided by the supplier of the diamonds.
