4th July 2016 – Saving what we have!

We’ve talked briefly before about how the value of a piece of jewellery is not always expressed in monetary terms, the memories that the jewellery holds are priceless.  Collette Waudby will be opening her studio on Vyse Street on Saturday and Sunday for Jewellery Quarter Open Studios and inviting you to bring your favourite pieces of jewellery that have tales to tell and will also be on hand to discuss how to keep these pieces in tip top condition.  Remodelling jewellery is a common practice and means that you can still maintain the memories but wear something that is more to your taste, Collette will be able to advise on this too.

Re modelling or renovating is not just the practice of jewellers as you will learn at Andupholster on Vyse Street.  Garry has over 40 years experience in all aspects of interior design, furniture design and traditional and modern upholstery. He runs regular courses in which you will learn how to restore well-loved furniture to its former glory along with gaining skills in furniture repair. Take a look at the workshop and discuss your next project or just marvel at the traditional tools and workmanship of this master craftsman. Here in the Jewellery Quarter we pass on our skills and share our knowledge. A visit to 1000 Trades on Sunday will show you how learning a trade can be the first step to a confident life.

Jay Blades of Jay and Co will be giving a talk and upcycling class from 2pm – 4pm (tickets here) learn about how his social enterprise has helped reach disadvantaged and disengaged groups in the community, fire them up and re-engage them through exciting activities. This will be a really interesting talk and demonstration and will see you leaving with the skills to update a tired piece of furniture as well as an understanding about the value of skill sharing regardless of your own trade or ability.

So with so many skills and tales to share we are really looking forward to inviting you to “come see what we do” over the weekend of 23rd and 24th July.
