Community Safety
Community Safety is an important aspect of the Jewellery Quarter, not only for its residents and visitors, but also for local businesses. The Jewellery Quarter is a relatively safe area, with few crimes recorded.
CCTV
The Jewellery Quarter has a number of Closed Circuit Television cameras (CCTV). The four cameras cover Ludgate Hill, St Paul’s Square, Caroline Street, Warstone Lane, Vyse Street and Frederick Street. The CCTV is monitored 24 hours a day by the Police.
Neighbourhood Policing
We have the Jewellery Quarter & St Paul’s Neighbourhood Policing Team located at Vyse Street Police Station. The team includes Sergeant Ifty Ahmed, PC David Harman, PC Denis Doherty and two Police Community Safety Officers – Amanda Williams and Michael Taylor.
The teams’ priorities for the Jewellery Quarter area are as follows: -
1. Burglaries and Theft from Motor Vehicles
The aim of the neighbourhood team is to reduce the number of burglary other building and vehicle crime within the neighbourhood.
2. Re-launch the Retail Radio in the Jewellery Quarter
In partnership with the Jewellery Quarter Marketing Initiative to re-launch retail radio in conjunction with the CCTV operators at Steelhouse Lane police station.
3. Securing Apartments in the Jewellery Quarter
The aim is to ensure the management companies complete the repairs affectively and quickly within an agreed and reasonable time.
4. Securing Derelict Buildings
Approval for the demolition of derelict shops on Warstone Lane in the Jewellery Quarter owned by Birmingham City Council due to it being unsafe has been obtained and this site will be used for car parking which is badly needed in the area.
