Learning at the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter

The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter offers an exciting range of events and activities for schools, community groups as well as for children, adults & families throughout the year.

Enjoy a guided tour around a real jewellery factory little changed since the early part of the last century, including a demonstration of jewellery making techniques at the jeweller’s bench. For more than eighty years Smith and Pepper produced jewellery from this workshop, founded in 1899.

The ‘Earth’s Riches’ gallery showcases jewellery made from material found in the natural world, from whale tooth and coral to diamond and platinum. A wide range of original jewellery by local designer makers is sold through the museum shop, as well as a wide variety of gifts and books.

In a new extension due to open April 2009, the Museum will tell the story of jewellery production in Birmingham over the last 200 years as well as exploring the Jewellery Quarter as it is today. A new temporary exhibition space will also be created and supported by a programme of workshops and events for all the family.

Community Programmes – What’s happening!
In partnership with St. George’s Post-16 Centre, Newtown, the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter has just been awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to embark on a project called Buttons & BLING.

Working alongside four distinct groups within the immediate neighbourhood, the aims of the project are to discover and explore some of the extraordinary things that have been made locally in the past and that have shaped the area’s industrial heritage.

Participating groups will have the opportunity to go on various site visits and work alongside artists and makers in creating new objects reflecting the area’s history but with the contemporary twist of today!

For further information about Buttons & BLING, please contact the Education & Outreach Officer on 0121 554 3598.

Opening times: Good Friday to end of October 11.30-4.00 Tuesday to Sunday (plus Bank Holiday Mondays), November to Good Friday 11.30–4.00 Tuesday to Saturday.

Location: 75-79 Vyse Street, just 75 metres from the Jewellery Quarter clock and 25 metres from the Jewellery Quarter Station. Telephone: 0121 554 3598
